LASIEC Presents Certificates of Return to Newly Elected LG, LCDA Officials

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) on Wednesday presented Certificates of Return to newly elected Chairmen, Vice-Chairmen, and Councillors following the successful conclusion of the 2025 Local Government (LG) and Local Council Development Area (LCDA) elections.

The presentation ceremony was held at LASIEC’s headquarters in Sabo, Yaba, and signified the official confirmation of the electoral victories by the grassroots leaders chosen by Lagos residents.

Presiding over the event, LASIEC Chairman, Justice Ayotunde Phillips Okikiolu-Ighile (retd.), described the occasion as a significant milestone in Lagos’ democratic journey.

“This event transcends the mere presentation of certificates. It represents the embodiment of democratic values and the culmination of several months of strategic planning, civic involvement, and institutional collaboration,” she stated.

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile praised Lagosians for their active participation in the elections, emphasizing that the credibility of democracy depends on the people’s engagement.

She also extended gratitude to key stakeholders who contributed to the process, including political parties, candidates, the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), security agencies, civil society groups, traditional institutions, youth and religious bodies, market leaders, and persons with disabilities.

The LASIEC boss commended her team and ad-hoc staff for their dedication and professionalism, especially in overcoming early logistical challenges.

“Their dedication and professionalism were instrumental in delivering a credible poll,” she noted.

When asked about voter engagement, the retired Justice revealed that the 2025 elections saw an unprecedented voter turnout of 24%, more than doubling the 10% recorded in the 2021 polls.

She credited the increase to LASIEC’s intensive voter education efforts — including branded buses, jingles on radio, and strategic billboard campaigns across the state.

The elections were widely lauded for their peaceful conduct, with both domestic and international observers describing them as “one of the most orderly local government elections in recent memory.”

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile concluded by charging the newly elected officials to prioritize service and transparency, reminding them that the electorate will hold them accountable.

“The real work begins now. Your victory is a call to serve, and the people are watching,” she said.
