Babachir Lawal has accused the Tinubu administration of deceiving Nigerians about the removal of fuel subsidy, alleging that the government is secretly covering part of the costs while claiming otherwise.
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration of lacking transparency regarding the removal of Nigeria’s fuel subsidy.

Speaking in an interview with Channels Television on Monday, Lawal said the government has not been honest about the true state of fuel pricing and subsidy payments.

“The high cost of petrol in Nigeria does not reflect the true market realities,” he stated, alleging that the administration is secretly absorbing part of the subsidy costs to prevent further economic hardship.

He criticised what he described as policy inconsistency, noting that the current government campaigned on economic reform but appears to be backtracking on key commitments. “This raises serious questions about honesty in governance and the sincerity of the fuel subsidy removal policy,” he added.
Lawal urged the administration to be transparent with Nigerians on the actual financial implications of its fuel pricing strategy, warning that “hiding subsidy payments under other budget categories could worsen economic instability and damage public trust in leadership.”
