The Federal Government has released new compliance figures under its 2024 Code of Practice, showing millions of actions taken against social media violations.

The Federal Government has confirmed that “thirteen million, five hundred ninety-seven thousand, fifty-seven (13,597,057) social media accounts have been closed down and deactivated” over offensive content and other violations.

According to a statement signed by Mrs. Hadiza Umar, Director of Corporate Communications & Media Relations at the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the development was captured in the “Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report Highlights Social Media Platforms efforts on Online Harm Protection.”

The Code, issued by the NCC, NBC, and NITDA, provides clear guidelines for promoting online safety and tackling harmful content.

Umar noted that the report offers “valuable insights into the platforms’ efforts to address user safety concerns in line with the Code of Practice and the platforms’ community guidelines.”

  • “754,629 registered complaints.”
  • “58,909,112 content takedown.”

The statement commended Google, Microsoft, and TikTok for their compliance and submission of the 2024 report, while stressing the need for ongoing collaboration to ensure a safer digital space.
