  • Former President Goodluck Jonathan met with ADC National Chairman David Mark on Thursday night, sparking fresh speculation about his possible return to the 2027 presidential race.
  • The meeting followed the ADC’s adoption as a coalition platform for opposition forces, though Jonathan has not declared any intention to run.

Former President, Goodluck Jonathan, on Thursday night, held a closed-door meeting with the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, fuelling renewed speculation about his possible return to the presidential race in 2027.

The meeting took place just hours after the ADC concluded its first national caucus meeting in Abuja, where the party was formally adopted as the coalition platform for opposition forces.

Some influential figures within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have been mounting pressure on Jonathan to contest against President Bola Tinubu in the next general election.

Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president until his defeat by the late President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, is constitutionally entitled to only one more term if he chooses to run and wins.

Though details of Thursday’s meeting were not immediately disclosed, Jonathan has a longstanding relationship with Mark, who served as Senate President during his administration.

It was under Mark’s leadership that the “doctrine of necessity” was crafted by the National Assembly. This move cleared the path for Jonathan to assume office as Acting President in 2010 during the illness of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

The former President has not announced his intention to contest in the 2027 presidential election.
