  • The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs also announced ₦6.3 billion in loans for flood victims nationwide.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has disbursed over ₦300 billion to more than 8.1 million households through the Conditional Cash Transfer scheme as part of its effort to reduce poverty and improve community resilience across the country.

The Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Yusuf Sanunu, disclosed this on Monday during a roundtable event in Abuja to mark the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

According to Sanunu, the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aimed at strengthening the capacity of vulnerable households through direct cash interventions.

“As of today, in terms of conditional cash transfer, over 8.1 million households in Nigeria have been reached with a total sum of over ₦300 billion. This has really improved their capacity, their health, and education, and the process will continue,” Sanunu said.

The Minister added that 21,000 Nigerians affected by flood disasters are also set to benefit from an interest-free loan scheme worth ₦6.3 billion, designed to enhance recovery and farming productivity in flood-prone communities.

“We are planning, together with both national and state levels, to improve our flood mitigation strategy by giving 21,000 Nigerians interest-free and collateral-free loans of ₦300,000 each. This will help address crises in farming and reduce the impact of flooding in Nigeria,” he explained.

Sanunu further revealed ongoing collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to boost food security and empower internally displaced persons (IDPs) through agricultural schemes that provide ready markets for their produce.

“We have initiated a program where the internally displaced persons will produce food items, of which the government will off-take 70%, while 30% will remain with them for consumption. The money from the government off-take will be given directly to the displaced persons,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaida Umar, noted that climate change, conflicts, pandemics, and technological risks have increased the frequency and intensity of disasters in Nigeria, calling for a shift from reactive responses to proactive disaster management.

She announced the launch of two key policy instruments — the NEMA Strategy Plan (2025–2029) and the National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy (2025–2030) — both aimed at improving disaster preparedness, early warning systems, and risk-informed investment across multiple sectors.

Umar emphasized the importance of innovative financing mechanisms such as catastrophe bonds, climate funds, and insurance pools to sustain long-term resilience and recovery efforts.

The event was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, lawmakers, and international development partners.
