  • The Nigerian Copyright Commission has suspended several .ng domains accused of illegally distributing copyrighted music and creative works.

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has suspended a number of Nigerian websites allegedly involved in the large-scale, unauthorized distribution of copyrighted music, sound recordings and other creative works.

The action, carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian Internet Registration Association (NIRA), followed a formal request from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).

In a statement, the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Ijeoma Egbunike, listed the affected domains as Val9ja.com.ng, tunesloaded.com.ng, voxnaija.com.ng, music.360media.com.ng, medianub.com.ng, naijalevels.com.ng, and mp3juice.com.ng.

According to the NCC’s task force on online piracy, the websites were found to be “blatantly infringing” copyright laws by illegally sharing unlicensed Nigerian and international music and audiovisual content. The Commission said their activities undermine legitimate streaming platforms and deprive creators and investors of rightful revenue.

It added that the move forms part of its ongoing enforcement programme under the Copyright Act, 2022, which empowers the NCC to investigate, disrupt and curb online copyright violations across websites, streaming platforms and other digital distribution channels.

“The NCC worked closely with NIRA throughout the process and continues to engage domain registrars to ensure the swift suspension of any .ng domain found to be in breach of the copyright law,” the statement said.

Reaffirming the agency’s renewed commitment to clamp down on digital piracy, NCC Director General John Asein said the suspensions send a clear message that the Nigerian government will not tolerate the theft of creative works.

“The Nigerian Copyright Commission remains vigilant and fully prepared to take decisive action against all forms of copyright infringement to safeguard Nigeria’s creative space and its digital future,” he said.
