  • Peter Obi has raised alarm over a surge in violent attacks, kidnappings, and institutional breakdown across Nigeria, warning that the country is drifting into “avoidable disorder” due to what he calls “collective leadership failures.”

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the wave of violence, abductions, and institutional decay recorded across Nigeria within just 10 days, describing the situation as a result of “collective leadership failures.”

In a statement issued on Monday, Obi said the country was experiencing “unprecedented negative news” and warned that Nigeria was spiralling into preventable chaos due to insecurity, lawlessness, and weak governance.

According to him, “The past 10 days in Nigeria have witnessed unprecedented negative news, a level of chaos, insecurity, and institutional decay that should trouble the conscience of all the leaders. Our country is now going through troubling times, not by fate, but by our collective leadership failures that allow insecurity, lawlessness, and institutional decay to thrive.”

Obi noted that each day had brought a new tragedy, reflecting the absence of competent and compassionate leadership.

“Each day confronts us with a new tragedy and a new reminder that our beloved country is drifting amid a clear absence of competent, compassionate, responsive, and responsible leadership. We have all watched a nation blessed with people of strength and resilience drift into avoidable disorder,” he said.

The former governor listed multiple violent incidents across several states, including the killing of a Brigadier General, abductions in Zamfara, Kebbi, Kwara, Niger, and the latest attack on 13 female farmers in Borno State.

He referenced the disturbing pattern of events and asked the pressing question, “Are we cursed, or are we the curse?”

Obi also highlighted a series of incidents between November 11 and 23, including the kidnapping of Ministry of Defence directors, the abduction of schoolgirls, attacks on worshippers, ambushes on soldiers, attacks on farmers, and political and judicial disruptions that further erode public trust in institutions.

He warned that no nation can survive with absent or indifferent leadership.

“No serious nation survives on excuses, indifference, or absentee leadership. Nigeria is bleeding because those elected to protect the nation have chosen comfort over courage, politics over people, and power over purpose.”

Obi urged political leaders to embrace competence, compassion, and accountability, stressing that governance is a duty, not a title.

“We need competence, compassion, and a government that shows up when it matters the most. To every Nigerian shaken by the events of the past 10 days, my heart is with you. You deserve safety. You deserve peace. Nigeria must rise again.”

He concluded by reaffirming that Nigerians deserve a government that values human life and prioritises national security above politics.
