The Egypt World Cup Victory that generations of football fans had dreamed about finally arrived on Sunday as the Pharaohs defeated New Zealand 3-1 to secure their first-ever FIFA World Cup win.
The historic triumph in Vancouver ended a 92-year wait for Egypt, which first appeared at the World Cup in 1934 but had never managed to record a victory in seven previous matches across the 1934, 1990 and 2018 tournaments.
Having earned a respectable draw against Belgium in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Egypt entered the encounter determined to rewrite history. However, the evening began on a difficult note.
New Zealand stunned the Pharaohs by taking an early lead through defender Finn Surman, who capitalised on a well-worked set-piece to put the All Whites ahead and silence Egyptian supporters inside BC Place Stadium.
The goal gave New Zealand confidence as they chased a historic win of their own, while Egypt struggled to find rhythm during the first half despite the presence of star players Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush.
But after the break, Egypt emerged a transformed side.
The comeback began when Mostafa Ziko rose highest to head home the equaliser, sparking life into the Egyptian attack and shifting the momentum firmly in their favour.
With New Zealand beginning to tire, Egypt’s superior quality started to shine through. The breakthrough moment arrived when captain Mohamed Salah combined brilliantly with Ziko before calmly finishing to give the Pharaohs a deserved lead.
The Liverpool star’s goal sent Egyptian fans into celebration and highlighted his importance to a team seeking to make history on the global stage.
Egypt sealed the landmark victory late in the match when substitute Mahmoud Hassan, popularly known as Trezeguet, headed home from a Salah corner kick to make it 3-1.
Salah finished the contest with a goal and an assist, producing a captain’s performance in one of the most significant matches in Egyptian football history.

Beyond the history books, the Egypt World Cup Victory has dramatically improved the Pharaohs’ chances of reaching the knockout stages for the first time ever. With four points from their opening two matches, Egypt now head into their final group fixture with qualification firmly within reach.
For New Zealand, the defeat was a painful setback after an encouraging first-half display. Despite taking the lead, they were unable to withstand Egypt’s second-half resurgence and remain in search of their first World Cup victory.
For Egypt, however, this was a night of celebration and national pride.
Ninety-two years after their World Cup journey began, the Pharaohs finally achieved what generations before them could not. The historic Egypt World Cup Victory will forever be remembered as the moment Egypt ended its long wait and announced itself on football’s biggest stage.
