The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has clarified reports suggesting that the Federal Government has approved Adire as the new National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform, stressing that no final decision has been taken.
In a statement released on Thursday, the minister explained that his comments during an interview on Channels Television were misunderstood.
“For the avoidance of doubt, yes, I mentioned Adire during the discussion. I also mentioned Ankara. My intention was simply to cite examples of some of the proposals that have been put forward in the course of our consultations. It was not an announcement that any particular fabric has been adopted or approved to replace the current NYSC uniform.”
Olawande said the government is still evaluating different options based on several factors, including professional appearance, national identity, durability, functionality, affordability and the promotion of national pride.
“No final decision has been taken on the fabric or design.”
He added that any eventual decision would be based on extensive consultations with stakeholders and what best serves the interests of the NYSC and the country.
The minister urged Nigerians not to allow discussions about the uniform overshadow the broader reforms planned for the scheme.
According to him, the ongoing NYSC reforms are aimed at improving employability, promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening national integration, enhancing service delivery and creating a smoother transition from education to productive careers.
He also thanked Nigerians for their feedback, assuring the public that every proposal would be carefully considered in the best interest of the nation.
