France captain Kylian Mbappé has declared that his side are ready to do whatever it takes to win after guiding Les Bleus into the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay.

Mbappé converted a 70th-minute penalty to settle a tense and physical Round of 16 clash in Philadelphia, taking his tally at the tournament to seven goals and extending his all-time World Cup record to 19 goals.

The encounter was anything but straightforward, with Paraguay frustrating the French attack throughout and repeatedly attempting to unsettle Mbappé, particularly before his crucial penalty kick. Players from both teams clashed around the penalty spot, with Paraguay even trying to scuff up the turf moments before the Real Madrid star stepped up.

Despite the mind games, Mbappé kept his composure to score what proved to be the winning goal.

Speaking after the match, the France captain said his team knew exactly what kind of contest awaited them.

“We knew what sort of match we were in for, but I think today went really well. They thought we’d turn up in tuxedos, that we’d just come to pull off some spectacular moves.”

Mbappé insisted France are more than just an attractive attacking side, saying they are equally capable of matching opponents physically when required.

“We know how to play the dirty game too. We did that today; we won, and even in that respect we were better than them.”

The 27-year-old added that France have no problem adapting their style if it means progressing in the tournament.

“The way we played today showed that we’re not just a team that knows how to play attacking football. If we have to get our hands dirty, we’ll get our hands dirty. We’ve no problem with that.”

Although the fiercely contested encounter produced only three yellow cards—all shown to French players—the match was filled with aggressive challenges, heated exchanges and constant attempts by Paraguay to disrupt France’s rhythm.

Mbappé, however, refused to criticise Paraguay’s approach.

“That’s their football, that’s their way of playing. Everyone plays to their strengths; there’s no right or wrong way to play football. There’s only one way, and that’s to win.”

“They tried to get the better of us that way, but we got the better of them in that too. Now we’re moving on to the next stage.”

France will now face Morocco in a highly anticipated quarter-final clash next Thursday in Boston—a rematch of their 2022 World Cup semi-final, which France won 2-0.

Mbappé expects another difficult battle but is confident Les Bleus will be ready.

“We know they’re a very good team, and we’re really looking forward to playing against them. We’ll give it our all to keep moving forward.”
