- Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti insists there is no special plan to stop Erling Haaland, expressing full confidence in his defenders ahead of Sunday’s high-stakes World Cup last-16 clash with Norway.

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has dismissed suggestions that his side needs a special tactical blueprint to contain Norway striker Erling Haaland ahead of their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 encounter on Sunday.
Haaland heads into the knockout clash in red-hot form, having scored five goals in just three matches to emerge as one of the tournament’s leading Golden Boot contenders. However, Ancelotti believes his experienced defenders already know exactly what it takes to face the Manchester City forward.
The Norwegian goal machine will once again come up against Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães, while Brazil captain Marquinhos also has plenty of experience battling Haaland during their UEFA Champions League encounters.
“Everyone knows how he works. I have nothing to explain to my defenders because they’ve faced him several times,” Ancelotti told reporters.
“I don’t think there’s such a thing as an anti-Haaland plan. I don’t need to tell my players how to defend.”
Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimarães echoed his manager’s confidence but admitted stopping Haaland begins with cutting off the service to him rather than focusing solely on the striker himself.
“We have to avoid the ball getting to his feet,” Guimarães said. “He only needs one chance to decide the match, so we must make sure we don’t allow him that opportunity.”
The midfielder is expected to shoulder even greater responsibility after Lucas Paquetá was ruled out through injury, forcing Brazil into a midfield reshuffle.
Adding to the challenge, Sunday’s showdown in New Jersey is expected to be played in demanding weather conditions, with extreme heat warnings issued across the region. Although temperatures are forecast to drop slightly, players are still expected to battle intense humidity and heat.
“I don’t think anybody is used to that temperature,” Guimarães admitted. “It’s going to be a very physical game, so it’s important that every player, especially those coming off the bench, is ready.”
Despite the obstacles, Ancelotti believes Brazil’s dramatic comeback victory over Japan in the previous round has strengthened his team’s confidence ahead of the knockout clash.
“We’re at a stage where we can perform at our best because we’re confident,” the Italian said. “The last match prepared us for anything that could happen.”
The Brazil boss also revealed winger Raphinha is nearing full fitness after recovering from a thigh injury and could make a return from the bench.
Meanwhile, Ancelotti hinted that fans may finally see Neymar and Vinícius Júnior feature together, with Neymar continuing his recovery after making a brief substitute appearance following a calf injury.
With a place in the World Cup quarter-finals at stake, Brazil will look to overcome Haaland’s threat and continue their quest for a record-extending sixth world title.
