Maresca Faces Early Test

For Manchester City’s new manager, Enzo Maresca, the defeat represented a difficult introduction to life against the reigning champions.

Myles Lewis-Skelly, who featured in Arsenal’s midfield despite reported interest from Chelsea and Manchester United, produced a brilliant pass that split the City defence.

Calafiori raced onto the ball, took advantage of poor marking and calmly finished past Donnarumma from 12 yards.

The goal was reportedly Arsenal’s quickest in the Community Shield since 1968.

City struggled to respond, with new signing Elliot Anderson, who arrived from Nottingham Forest for £116 million, unable to impose himself on the game.

Haaland also endured a quiet afternoon, despite having opportunities to get City back into the contest.

Instead, Arsenal remained in control and eventually completed a convincing victory through Odegaard.

The result means Arsenal have lifted their 18th Community Shield, although history shows that winning the trophy does not necessarily guarantee Premier League success. Only Manchester City, in 2019, have gone on to win the league among the previous 15 Community Shield winners.

However, judging by Arsenal’s dominant display in Cardiff, Arteta’s men appear determined to make this season about much more than just a strong start.
