Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has died following a brief illness, his family announced in a statement shared on his Instagram page.

The family thanked fans and well-wishers for their support and requested understanding as they mourned his passing.

“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness. We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen,” the statement read.

The announcement followed a tribute by the National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Alhaji Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, who shared the actor’s photograph on Instagram on Thursday, October 22, 2026.

“Another great thespian gone…Rest in peace Francis Duru!!”

Duru’s death followed concerns about his health earlier in the year. A video circulated in June 2026 had prompted speculation that he was battling a terminal illness, which he reportedly denied at the time.

The actor had also previously faced false death rumours, leaving fans hoping that the latest reports would prove untrue.

Over a career spanning numerous Nigerian film productions, Duru became a familiar face to audiences across Nigeria and beyond, earning admiration for his versatility and memorable performances.

News of his passing prompted tributes from colleagues and fans on social media.

Actor Boma Akpore wrote: “May his soul rest in peace 🙏🏾.”

Another social media user, @officialolotu9, described him as: “One of the best that graced the screen.”

The family’s statement did not disclose the specific illness that led to his death.
