Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election said he has no intention to end the relationship between his supporters known as the ‘Obidients’ and the Nigeria’s literary icon, Prof Wole Soyinka.

VerseNews Nigeria reports that Obi who visited the Nobel laureate on Sunday May 8, 2023 said their discussion was centred on his aspiration for a better Nigeria.

He reminded Soyinka of the huge price he paid just before the outbreak of the civil war, fighting for the cause of the Igbos.

“Today, I visited one of Nigeria’s most revered figures and an international literary icon, Prof Wole Soyinka. Prof Soyinka has been a father whom I hold in very high esteem for what he has achieved and stands for in the struggle for a better Nigeria.”

“His reputation as a fighter for justice and equity in our society has been legendary and we will NEVER ignore them. I had a very useful and enriching discussion about his aspirations for a better and greater Nigeria, and he shared a lot with me about his dream for a greater and more inclusive Nigeria. I reminded the Nobel laureate of the huge price he paid just before the outbreak of the civil war, fighting for the cause of the Igbos.”

“I cherished this Sunday’s visit which was intended to erase the needless misconceptions about the relationship between the great icon and the OBIdient family,” Obi said.

This Online News Media reported that Soyinka earlier had a kind of misunderstanding with the Obidients following controversies and critics over expressing his opinion on the comments made by the party’s vice presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed.

Soyinka in an interview with ‘Channels TV’ condemned the comments made by Datti over the swearing in of the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

According to the Professor, Datti “comments were unbecoming, a threat to the judiciary. It is a fascist language which alienates the people. It is unacceptable and I refuse to be a part of it.”

However, the Obidients feels disappointed by the Soyinka’s condemnation of the VP comments. Obidients in their quest to find answers demands to know which of the comments made by Datti is unbecoming and fascistic as said by Soyinka.

Replying to the Obidients in a statement titled ‘Fascism On Course‘, Soyinka said the ‘seeds of seeds of incipient fascism in the political arena have evidently matured‘.

He further said “‘Obidients’ is one of the most repulsive, off-putting concoctions I ever encountered in any political arena. Some love it however, and this is what freedom is about. Choice. Taste. Free emotions.”
