Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed readiness to serve as running mate to former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 general election.

Kwankwaso made the declaration during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme while speaking about his recent political alignment with opposition figures.

The former governor said he and Obi had agreed to work together to address Nigeria’s security challenges and provide what he described as credible leadership for the country.

“Both of us, my humble self and Peter Obi, have agreed to tackle the issue of insecurity head-on to ensure there is peace and stability in this country,” he said.

Kwankwaso and Obi both contested the 2023 presidential election under different political parties, with Kwankwaso running on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) while Obi contested under the Labour Party.

The two politicians recently joined the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress before later aligning with the Nigerian Democratic Congress.

When asked whether he would accept the vice-presidential slot if Obi eventually emerges as the coalition’s presidential candidate, Kwankwaso said he would gladly support the arrangement if it is the party’s decision.

“If the party decides that I should be the running mate of any candidate from the South under the circumstances, I’d be happy to work together with him,” he stated.

The former Kano governor also expressed confidence that a political alliance between him and Obi would offer Nigerians a strong alternative ahead of the 2027 elections.

“Personally, I cannot remember any better combination, no matter how much time is given to find those who can beat us in terms of doing the right thing for this country,” he added.

The development is expected to further fuel discussions around a possible opposition coalition aimed at challenging the ruling party in the next presidential election.
