The Nigerian government has launched the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, aiming to ease the impact of fuel subsidy removal and transform the country’s transportation sector.

VerseNews reports that the programme Director of the initiative, Michael Oluwabgemi, said this during the inauguration of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas convertion centre in Kaduna at the weekend.

The Nigerian government says the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative will ease the burden of fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians and reposition the country’s transportation landscape.

In August 2023, President Bola Tinubu approved the establishment of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative to cushion the impact of the fuel subsidy removal.

The initiative is targeting over 11,000 new CNG-enabled vehicles and 55,000 CNG conversion kits for existing PMS-dependent vehicles.

Michael Oluwabgemi, said the move was a bold step towards realising sustainable, affordable and eco-friendly energy in Nigeria.

He also explained that the compressed natural gas initiative will offer an alternative fuel source that would help address the complains among Nigerians.

Following the successful inauguration of CNG conversation centres in Lagos and Abuja, authorities insist that the Federal Government’s focus on assembling CNG-enabled vehicles within the country will stimulate economic growth and bolster the nation’s automotive manufacturing capabilities.
