BREAKING: Three-Storey Student Hostel Collapses in Anambra, Several Trapped (Video)

• A three-storey student hostel, Elite Five Star Lodge, has collapsed in Oko, Anambra State, trapping an unknown number of occupants believed to be students.

• Emergency responders have rescued some victims and are continuing search-and-rescue operations as authorities work to determine the number of casualties.

A three-storey building used as a student hostel has collapsed in Amokpala, Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, trapping an unknown number of occupants beneath the rubble.

The building, identified as Elite Five Star Lodge, is located beside Tonimas Filling Station and reportedly collapsed in the early hours of Monday.

The incident caused panic among residents and passers-by as cries for help were heard from inside the collapsed structure, with many of the trapped occupants believed to be students.

Although the exact number of casualties has not yet been confirmed, eyewitnesses said the building came down while several students were inside.

One eyewitness, identified simply as Ifeoma, described the terrifying moment.

“We heard a very loud noise before the building collapsed. The noise attracted many residents and students, who rushed to the scene to see what had happened. Within moments after the loud noise, the occupants inside started shouting for help as the building fell,” she said.

Videos and photographs circulating online showed emergency responders, security personnel and volunteers searching through the debris in an effort to rescue those trapped.

Officials of the Anambra State Fire Service, the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other emergency agencies were seen carrying out rescue operations at the scene.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the police-led Joint Security Team responded immediately after receiving a distress call.

According to him, the area was secured to prevent further danger while rescue operations commenced in collaboration with other emergency agencies.

“The incident resulted in some occupants being trapped beneath the rubble. On receipt of the distress report, the Police, in collaboration with other security agencies, immediately mobilised to the scene, secured the area to prevent further danger, and coordinated rescue efforts,” Ikenga said.

He added that some injured victims had already been rescued and taken to a hospital in Oko for treatment, while efforts continued to reach others who may still be trapped.

The police spokesperson urged members of the public to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information and stay away from the scene to allow rescue workers unhindered access.

Authorities said the number of casualties and those affected would be communicated after rescue operations are completed.
