Father Drags 27-Year-Old Daughter to Court for Refusing to Get Married Even After Earning a Degree

• A father in Kaduna State has asked a Shari’a Court to intervene after his 27-year-old daughter allegedly failed to get married despite completing her education, prompting the judge to adjourn the case for further proceedings.

A father in Kaduna State has taken his 27-year-old daughter before a Shari’a Court, seeking judicial intervention over her failure to get married despite completing her education.

The father, identified as Lawal Hamisu, filed the case before Shari’a Court II sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna, asking the court to assist in facilitating his daughter’s marriage.

Represented by his lawyer, H.B. Debo, Hamisu told the court that his daughter, Fatima Lawal, had earned a Higher National Diploma (HND) and had received interest from several admirers over the years but had not introduced any serious suitor for marriage.

According to him, he wants the court to compel his daughter to find a suitable partner, present him before the court and allow the marriage process to proceed.

Hamisu, who said he is the father of 11 children, also alleged that Fatima’s mother had turned their children against him, damaging his relationship with them.

Responding to the claims, Fatima told the court that she currently had no serious suitor.

She explained that although some men had expressed interest in her, none had formally approached her or her family with a marriage proposal.

The presiding judge, Malam Yakubu Abdullahi, described the matter as delicate because it involved a dispute between a father and his daughter.

The judge said he would hold separate meetings with both parties to better understand the issues surrounding the case before making any decision.

The matter was subsequently adjourned until August 3 for further proceedings.
