Strong indications have emerged that the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is preparing to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as consultations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

A senior party official in Abuja disclosed to Punch that Obi’s supporters and loyalists have already begun groundwork for the move, suggesting that the former Anambra State governor has largely made up his mind to join the ADC coalition.

According to the source, Obi recently met with the National Chairman of the ADC, David Mark, to reaffirm his commitment to the coalition after the party formally asked him to clarify his political position about three weeks ago.

The party official said the ADC’s stance and internal consultations may have convinced Obi to finally pitch his tent with the party.

“We are aware that Peter Obi is making plans to declare for the ADC on December 31 in Enugu. Although he has yet to formally inform the party, the plans are genuine,” the source said.

The official further revealed that Enugu was deliberately chosen for the declaration rally, despite Obi being from neighbouring Anambra State.

“Enugu is the political capital of the South-East. Obi is representing the region, not just his state. That must have informed his decision,” the source added.

However, the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, declined to confirm the planned defection, stating that discussions were still ongoing.

“The point is that there is no official announcement yet. But consultations are ongoing,” Abdullahi said.

Peter Obi finished third in the 2023 presidential election, behind former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who emerged winner. Obi, however, stunned political observers by defeating Tinubu in Lagos, the President’s home state, a result that cemented his influence and popularity, especially among young voters.

If confirmed, Obi’s move to the ADC would mark a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition politics and could reshape alliances ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
