The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the human and economic losses suffered by Nigerians in repeated xenophobic attacks in South Africa, with the aim of securing compensation for victims and strengthening diplomatic efforts.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Babajimi Benson, who noted that despite years of violent attacks on Nigerians, there has never been a comprehensive assessment of those killed, injured, displaced or the value of properties and businesses destroyed.

Lawmakers recalled Nigeria’s significant role in supporting South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle and expressed concern that Nigerians living legally in the country have continued to face killings, assaults, looting, arson and forced displacement over the years.

The House also raised concerns over renewed anti-foreigner campaigns in South Africa, saying the lack of verified data on victims and losses has weakened Nigeria’s ability to pursue justice and meaningful diplomatic engagement.

Following the adoption of the motion, the House mandated its Committees on Integration and Cooperation in Africa and Diaspora, alongside the Committee on Foreign Affairs, to investigate the attacks, document casualties and economic losses, compile an inventory of abandoned properties and recommend legal and diplomatic measures to secure compensation for affected Nigerians.

The committees have been given four weeks to submit their findings for further legislative action.
