On Friday, the Supreme Court rejected a plea for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

VerseNews reports that the judgment, delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim but written by Justice Garba Lawal, overturned the Court of Appeal’s decision from October, which had ordered Kanu’s release and dismissed the terrorism charges against him.

The Supreme Court emphasized that despite Kanu’s alleged unlawful rendition from Kenya by the Nigerian government, such actions did not strip the courts of their authority to proceed with the trial.

Justice Lawal noted the absence of Nigerian law cited in the case seeking Kanu’s release based on unlawful abduction, suggesting that the appropriate response would be for Kanu to file a civil matter against the act rather than preventing the continuation of his trial for criminal charges.

The Supreme Court directed Kanu to defend himself against the remaining seven counts of terrorism charges.

According to the Court, at the moment, the remedy for such an action is for Kanu to file a civil matter against the act instead of removing the powers of the courts to continue with his trial for alleged criminal charges.
