South African Grammy-winning singer Tyla has removed Lagos from the schedule of her APOP World Tour, days after her planned December 22 concert in Nigeria sparked widespread boycott calls over renewed xenophobic attacks against Nigerians living in South Africa.

A check of the singer’s official tour website on Friday confirmed that the Lagos stop, previously scheduled for December 22, has been removed from the itinerary. The updated schedule still includes performances across Europe, North America and South Africa but no longer lists Nigeria as part of the tour.

The development comes less than a week after Tyla announced Lagos as the only Nigerian stop on her global tour, with the announcement generating mixed reactions across social media.

Many Nigerians urged fans to boycott the concert in protest over the reported attacks on Nigerians in South Africa, arguing that South African entertainers should not perform in Nigeria while fellow Africans continue to face violence. Others, however, insisted musicians should not be held responsible for the actions of criminals or government policies.

The controversy escalated after activist VeryDarkMan threatened to mobilise members of his Ratel Movement to prevent the concert from taking place, accusing South African celebrities of remaining silent over the attacks.

In contrast, activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore opposed the boycott campaign, arguing that Tyla should not be blamed for xenophobic violence.

The singer’s decision to remove Lagos from the tour schedule also comes amid renewed concerns over the safety of Nigerians in South Africa following reports of fresh xenophobic attacks and the death of a Nigerian, Chika Ibe, in Cape Town.

As of the time of filing this report, neither Tyla nor her management has explained why the Lagos date was removed from the tour schedule. The concert promoters have also not announced whether the show has been cancelled or postponed.
