Wike speaks on dumping PDP after threats of expulsion from party chieftains

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former governor of Rivers State, reiterates his allegiance to the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) despite facing threats of expulsion from party chieftains.

Wike’s stance comes amidst a backdrop of discord within the party following his deviation from party lines during the lead-up to the 2023 presidential election.

Wike had advocated for the PDP to maintain its internal power-sharing arrangement by favoring a presidential ticket from southern Nigeria, leading to his withdrawal of support for Atiku Abubakar, a northern candidate who secured the PDP primary election victory.

Subsequently, Wike aligned himself with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), throwing his weight behind the emergence of President Bola Tinubu as the APC flagbearer for the 2023 election.

Despite mounting pressure and calls for his expulsion from the PDP, Wike stands firm in his party affiliation, asserting his continued membership amidst speculation arising from his ministerial appointment by Tinubu.

Meanwhile, In a media interaction in Abuja, Wike reaffirms his commitment to the PDP while emphasizing his support for Tinubu’s candidacy.

Addressing his absence from key party gatherings and recent off-cycle election campaigns, Wike maintains his decision without remorse, emphasizing individual responsibility within the political landscape. He expresses a willingness to bear the consequences of his actions, stating, “As you see me now, everybody should carry their cross.”

Also,Wike defends his non-support of the PDP’s presidential candidate in 2023, dismissing calls for disciplinary action against him.

However,He underscores the need for governance priorities post-elections, emphasizing his dedication to his ministerial duties assigned by the president.

“Discipline me for what? That I did what? I am an advocate of the party’s constitution. Assuming we lost the governorship, will they be talking about Rivers as a PDP state?”

Since the elections and politicking are over, Wike has only one thing in mind.
“Now is the time for governance. Now is the time to do your assignment. The president has given me an assignment and I am busy carrying out my assignment,” the former governor said. “When the time for politics comes, we would know who is where and who is not where.”
