- President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari on the first anniversary of his death, describing him as a leader whose honesty, discipline and patriotism should inspire future generations.

President Bola Tinubu on Monday honoured the late former President Muhammadu Buhari on the first anniversary of his passing, describing him as a rare statesman whose legacy of integrity, simplicity and selfless service continues to inspire Nigeria.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at a special prayer session, Tinubu said Buhari’s journey from military ruler to democratically elected president distinguished him as one of Nigeria’s most remarkable political figures.
According to the President, Buhari’s life was defined by unwavering patriotism, courage and a commitment to serving the nation without seeking personal reward.
“President Buhari gave everything he had to this country, and he gave it without reservation. He served with courage, conviction and a patriotism that never asked what the nation could return to him,” Tinubu said.
Reflecting on their years together in politics, Tinubu described Buhari as a trusted ally and nation-builder who remained committed to constitutional democracy and progressive governance throughout his public life.
He noted that even after leaving office, Buhari continued to enjoy the trust and admiration of many Nigerians because his actions consistently reflected the values he preached.
“The trust of ordinary Nigerians did not depart from him. It is not given; it is earned through a lifetime of agreement between what a man says and what a man is,” the President added.
Tinubu urged political leaders, public officials and Buhari’s supporters to honour the late leader by embracing the virtues that defined his life.
“Our duty is to carry forward the inheritance he left us—honesty, simplicity and self-discipline. That is the only tribute worthy of him,” he said.
The President also assured former First Lady Aisha Buhari and the Buhari family of the Federal Government’s continued support while praying for Allah to grant the late president eternal rest.
A major highlight of the memorial event was the announcement by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, that Buhari’s family and associates would establish a foundation to preserve his legacy and promote the values he stood for.
The ceremony was attended by several prominent figures, including former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, Katsina State Deputy Governor Farouk Jobe, and religious leaders who offered special prayers for the late former president.
Vice President Kashim Shettima also presented a book of tributes in Buhari’s honour during the remembrance event.
