- Jhon Arias’ first-half strike proved decisive as Colombia defeated Ghana 1-0 to reach the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, extending their unbeaten run and setting up a clash with Switzerland.

Colombia secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ghana on Friday to advance to the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, thanks to an early goal from Jhon Arias.
Arias found the breakthrough in the 14th minute, calmly finishing a pinpoint cross from substitute Luis Suarez after striker Jhon Cordoba was forced off with an early injury.
Despite several opportunities to extend their lead, Colombia were denied by an inspired performance from Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi, who produced a string of impressive saves throughout the match.
Backed by thousands of passionate supporters who transformed the Kansas City stadium into a sea of yellow, Colombia dominated possession and controlled much of the encounter.
Speaking after the match, midfielder Gustavo Puerta said, “I don’t have the words to describe this moment. It’s a dream come true. I think we’ve shown it game after game. This is a team that plays with its heart, that plays with its soul.”
Forward Luis Diaz, whose second-half goal was ruled out for offside, urged caution despite the victory, saying, “We need to stay grounded, take it step by step, remain calm and keep improving.”
Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz admitted Colombia deserved the win, stating, “They controlled much better the game… I think the best team won.”
The result extends Colombia’s unbeaten run at the tournament after topping their group ahead of Portugal, Uzbekistan and DR Congo. They will now face Switzerland in the Round of 16 as they continue their impressive World Cup campaign.
