DStv subscribers may lose access to 12 major Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) channels—including CNN, Discovery Channel, TLC and Cartoon Network—starting January 1, 2026, if MultiChoice and WBD fail to finalise a new distribution deal.

The pay-TV company, now owned by Canal+, issued a warning to customers on Monday via SMS, revealing that its current content agreement with WBD expires on December 31, 2025, and negotiations have not yet produced a renewal.

“While discussions between the parties continue, no agreement has been reached at this stage. If this remains unchanged, several Warner Bros. Discovery channels may no longer be available on DStv from 1 January 2026,” MultiChoice said.

Channels under threat include:

  • Discovery Channel
  • CNN International
  • TLC
  • Discovery Family
  • Real Time
  • TNT Africa
  • Food Network
  • HGTV
  • Investigation Discovery
  • Cartoon Network
  • Cartoonito
  • Travel Channel

The potential blackout comes at a turbulent period for MultiChoice, which has suffered heavy subscriber losses. Over the last two financial years, the broadcaster has lost 2.8 million active subscribers, including 1.2 million in 2025 alone—an 8% drop across South Africa and the rest of Africa.

In Nigeria specifically, MultiChoice has lost 1.4 million customers over two years, driven largely by repeated subscription price hikes.

The content squeeze is expected to worsen. Paramount Africa has announced it will discontinue BET Africa and MTV Base from January 1, 2026, while CBS Reality and CBS Justice will shut down on December 31, 2025.

If MultiChoice fails to reach an agreement with WBD soon, millions of DStv subscribers may start the new year without some of the most-watched channels on the platform.
