The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to serving only one term if elected president in the 2027 general election.

Speaking during an exclusive interview on Sunday Politics with Seun Okinbaloye on Channels Television, Obi dismissed suggestions that his promise of a single four-year term was merely a strategy to win the presidency.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate insisted that he has no intention of staying in office beyond four years.

“I will serve for four years — full stop. If you want me, it’s four years, full stop — not a day more,” Obi declared.

His comments came in response to recent remarks by his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who disclosed that both men had reached an agreement for Obi to serve only one term if elected.

Confirming the arrangement, Obi described it as a gentleman’s agreement that must be honoured.

“It was an agreement. As gentlemen, we must respect it,” he said.

The former Anambra State governor maintained that four years would be enough to lay the foundation for Nigeria’s transformation and set the country on the right path.

“I don’t need more than four years to show the path Nigeria will take. It’s a simple thing,” Obi added.

The declaration comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 presidential election continue to gather momentum, with opposition parties positioning themselves to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Obi has repeatedly maintained that his ambition is driven by a desire to rebuild Nigeria rather than remain in office for an extended period.
