England captain Harry Kane made history on Wednesday after surpassing Brazilian football legend Pelé’s FIFA World Cup goals tally, scoring twice in England’s dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over DR Congo to book a place in the Round of 16.

Kane struck in the 75th minute to cancel out Congo DR’s early opener before netting the winner moments later, taking his overall World Cup tally to 13 goals and moving past Pelé’s 12-goal record.

The Bayern Munich striker had already become England’s all-time leading World Cup goalscorer after overtaking Gary Lineker during the group-stage victory over Panama. He now boasts 20 goals in major international tournaments, while extending his record as England’s all-time top scorer with 84 goals in 117 appearances.
