Renowned Nigerian businessman and philanthropist Tony Elumelu has shared a candid perspective on wealth and success, revealing that luck played a major role in his journey to becoming one of Africa’s most influential entrepreneurs.

Elumelu made the revelation during an appearance on the popular YouTube show Flow With Korty, hosted by media personality Korty EO. During the conversation, the billionaire reflected on his academic background, career growth, and the realities of achieving success in business.

The chairman of several leading companies, including United Bank for Africa (UBA), Heirs Holdings, Transcorp Group, and Heirs Energies, said many people wrongly assume that success is always a direct result of talent or intelligence.

According to him, success is not solely determined by being the smartest, strongest, or most hardworking individual.

“At times you don’t get successful because you are the best in class, or because you are the fittest, or because you are the most energetic. At times, you need luck. I am a product of luck,” Elumelu stated.

Others pointed out that while luck may create opportunities, individuals must still possess the discipline and determination to maximize those opportunities when they arise.

Elumelu remains one of Africa’s most respected business leaders. Through the Tony Elumelu Foundation, he has committed more than $100 million to empowering African entrepreneurs, helping thousands of young business owners across the continent access funding, mentorship, and training.
