- Nigerian billionaire businessman Tony Elumelu has sparked conversations online after admitting that luck played a significant role in his rise to success.

Renowned Nigerian businessman and philanthropist Tony Elumelu has shared a candid perspective on wealth and success, revealing that luck played a major role in his journey to becoming one of Africa’s most influential entrepreneurs.
Elumelu made the revelation during an appearance on the popular YouTube show Flow With Korty, hosted by media personality Korty EO. During the conversation, the billionaire reflected on his academic background, career growth, and the realities of achieving success in business.
The chairman of several leading companies, including United Bank for Africa (UBA), Heirs Holdings, Transcorp Group, and Heirs Energies, said many people wrongly assume that success is always a direct result of talent or intelligence.
According to him, success is not solely determined by being the smartest, strongest, or most hardworking individual.
“At times you don’t get successful because you are the best in class, or because you are the fittest, or because you are the most energetic. At times, you need luck. I am a product of luck,” Elumelu stated.
The billionaire, who graduated with a Second Class Lower (2:2) degree in Economics from Ambrose Alli University, noted that opportunities, timing, and favorable circumstances can sometimes play a crucial role in shaping a person’s future.
His comments quickly gained attention across social media platforms, where many Nigerians praised his humility and honesty. Several users described his remarks as a refreshing reminder that success often involves a combination of hard work, preparation, opportunity, and good fortune.
Others pointed out that while luck may create opportunities, individuals must still possess the discipline and determination to maximize those opportunities when they arise.
Elumelu remains one of Africa’s most respected business leaders. Through the Tony Elumelu Foundation, he has committed more than $100 million to empowering African entrepreneurs, helping thousands of young business owners across the continent access funding, mentorship, and training.
The businessman was also recently announced as the incoming Chairman of Seplat Energy, with the appointment expected to take effect in January 2027 following Heirs Energies’ emergence as the company’s largest shareholder through a $500 million acquisition.
His remarks have reignited discussions about the true ingredients of success, with many agreeing that while hard work remains essential, factors such as timing, opportunity, and luck can sometimes make all the difference.
Whether viewed as humility or a statement of reality, Elumelu’s admission has struck a chord with many Nigerians seeking inspiration in their own personal and professional journeys.
