Former Vice PrDOesident Joseph Boakai has won Liberia’s presidential election, defeating incumbent President George Weah in the second round of voting.
VerseNews gathered that Boakai, the Unity Party candidate, secured an unassailable lead with 814,212 votes out of 1,625,684 votes counted. Weah, from the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change, trailed with 785,778 votes.
As of 4 pm on Friday, Boakai led Weah by 28,434 votes, and with 25,694 ballots outstanding, Weah cannot surpass Boakai even if he receives all pending votes.
Weah, a former football star, had been in power since 2018, defeating Boakai in the previous election.
Boakai served as vice president under former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf from 2006 to 2018.
Weah reportedly accepted defeat, urging his supporters to follow his example and accept the election results.
Weah emphasized the importance of unity, graciousness in defeat, and prioritizing the country above party affiliations and personal interests.
