France booked their place in the World Cup quarter-finals after captain Kylian Mbappé’s second-half penalty secured a narrow 1-0 victory over a stubborn Paraguay side in Philadelphia.

Despite dominating possession for most of the contest, Les Bleus found it difficult to break down Paraguay’s disciplined defensive setup, with the South Americans frustrating Didier Deschamps’ men for over an hour under sweltering 38°C conditions.

Paraguay, ranked 41st in the world, defended deep with a five-man backline and relied on a physical approach that disrupted France’s attacking rhythm. The tactics nearly paid off, as the European giants struggled to create clear-cut chances and were restricted mainly to efforts from distance.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 70th minute when substitute Désiré Doué was brought down inside the penalty area after a determined run. Following a VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot, allowing Mbappé to calmly convert and hand France the decisive advantage.

The goal marked Mbappé’s seventh of the tournament, drawing him level with Lionel Messi as the competition’s joint-leading scorer. The Real Madrid forward has now netted 19 goals in just 19 World Cup appearances, leaving him only one goal shy of Messi’s overall World Cup tally of 20.

Paraguay’s resistance, which had already seen them eliminate Germany on penalties in the previous round, was finally broken, although they continued to battle until the closing stages. Their only shot on target came deep into stoppage time, highlighting France’s defensive control throughout the encounter.

The match was played on the 250th anniversary of American independence in Philadelphia, where pre-match celebrations included live performances, a military flyover and patriotic festivities before attention shifted to the action on the pitch.

France will now return to their Boston base to prepare for a quarter-final showdown against Morocco, who earlier defeated Canada 3-0 to reach the last eight.

While it was far from France’s most dazzling performance of the tournament, Mbappé once again delivered when it mattered most, keeping Les Bleus firmly on course in their quest for another World Cup title.
