Nine young men from Yabo Local Government Area of Sokoto State have lost their lives in a tragic road accident while travelling to Lagos in search of better economic opportunities.

The fatal crash, which occurred on Friday near Kainji in Niger State, has thrown the Yabo community into mourning, with tributes and condolences pouring in for the victims.

Reacting to the tragedy, the member representing Yabo/Shagari Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Umar Yusuf Danmaje Yabo, described the incident as a heartbreaking loss to the families, Sokoto State, and the nation.

According to the lawmaker, the victims had embarked on the journey with hopes of building better lives and supporting their loved ones.

“These were young men with dreams, ambitions, and the determination to build a better future for themselves and their families. Their untimely deaths while pursuing lawful means of livelihood are deeply painful,” he said.

Danmaje noted that the tragedy reflects the harsh economic realities pushing many Nigerian youths to travel long distances in search of employment.

He extended his condolences to the bereaved families, traditional rulers, and residents of Yabo, while praying for the repose of the victims’ souls.

The lawmaker also urged relevant authorities to strengthen road safety measures across the country and called on governments at all levels to expand youth empowerment, skills acquisition, and job creation programmes to reduce the need for risky migration in search of work.

A senior official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kebbi State confirmed that the accident occurred outside the state, near Kainji in Niger State, adding that the victims’ bodies had already been taken home for burial before the command was officially notified.

The tragic incident has renewed concerns over youth unemployment, internal migration, and the growing number of fatal road accidents on Nigerian highways.
