At least seven journalists have been confirmed dead following a tragic road accident in the Gombe South area of Gombe State on Monday evening.

The victims were reportedly returning from a wedding ceremony in the Gombe South Senatorial District, where they had gone to celebrate with a colleague, an employee of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).

Confirming the incident in a telephone interview, the Gombe State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Samson Kaura, described the crash as a fatal lone accident.

“It is a lone accident, and from the information we have so far, it is very fatal,” Kaura said.

While noting that full details were still being compiled, the FRSC commander said preliminary findings suggested a possible tyre burst.

“We have not gotten full details for now. Our officers are still on the ground carrying out rescue operations. I suspect it may have been a tyre burst. Perhaps the driver applied the brake and the vehicle somersaulted,” he explained.

In a later update, Kaura confirmed that 11 occupants were involved in the crash.

“From the information available to us, 11 people were involved. Sadly, seven died on the spot, while four others sustained varying degrees of injuries,” he said.

Rescue teams were still at the scene as of the time of the report, with a comprehensive investigation expected once operations are concluded.

Similarly, two separate accidents that occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the Sango-Ijoko Road on November 26 left five people dead and three others injured.

The accidents were blamed on speeding and dangerous driving.

The incident adds to growing concerns over the increasing number of fatal road crashes during the Yuletide season, a period often marked by heavy travel and heightened road risks.
