Argentina opened the scoring in the 29th minute through Lionel Messi, who beat goalkeeper Vozinha to hand the South Americans an early advantage.

Cape Verde responded with remarkable composure as Deroy Duarte finished brilliantly after collecting a pass from Ryan Mendes, beating Emiliano Martinez to level the scores.

The African side continued to frustrate Argentina, with veteran goalkeeper Vozinha producing several outstanding saves while defender Pico Lopes made a crucial goal-line clearance to force the match into extra time.

Argentina regained the lead shortly after extra time began when Lisandro Martinez fired home following a Lionel Messi corner.

However, Cape Verde stunned the football world once again.

Sidny Lopes Cabral produced one of the goals of the tournament, dribbling past Alexis Mac Allister before unleashing a sensational strike into the top corner to make it 2-2, sending fans inside the stadium into disbelief.

Unfortunately for the Blue Sharks, their fairytale run came to an end in the 111th minute when Diney Borges accidentally turned the ball into his own net, handing Argentina a dramatic victory.

Despite the defeat, Cape Verde’s fearless display sparked widespread praise from football lovers, former players, celebrities and even members of the Argentine team.

Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh praised the African side’s courage, writing on X: “Wow! This is a thunderstorm, win or lose! Boy, I am feeling so proud and inspired by this Cape Verde side versus Argentina — the overall performance, lack of complex, aggressive, fast, physical, technical… Nothing is taking me to bed until the end. You awake?”

Gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey also celebrated the team’s performance, saying: “Cape Verde! You have done incredibly well. What a team! You lost but left as warriors… Africa salutes you! As a Messi Stan, I salute you. Messi will never forget you. Argentina did sweat it out.”

Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad added: “No matter the final result, Cape Verde deserve Africa’s admiration. They dragged FIFA’s favourite all the way to extra time. Respect.”

Football analyst Mr Bayo described the Blue Sharks as “Incredible fighters”, while another supporter wrote: “Cape Verde came to win. They showed no respect to Argentina.”

Even Argentina captain Lionel Messi acknowledged Cape Verde’s performance after the game.

“We knew this would be a very tough match. In the World Cup, no one gives you anything for free. Now it’s about resting, learning from today, and focusing on the next game. Also, congratulations to Cape Verde for that great performance,” Messi said.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni admitted his side underestimated nothing about the African nation.

“There are no easy opponents. Congratulations to Cape Verde. Even though everyone thought it would be an easy game, we were the first to know it wouldn’t be. We were hit at key moments, but we always kept pushing and looking for the win.”

He further added: “We have to congratulate the opponent. When people say there are no easy opponents, they proved today that they are a great team.”

Cape Verde’s World Cup campaign exceeded all expectations.

Drawn alongside Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia in Group H, the tournament newcomers remained unbeaten in regulation time throughout the competition, drawing all three group-stage matches to qualify for the Round of 32.

Although their remarkable journey ended against Argentina after extra time, the Blue Sharks leave the 2026 FIFA World Cup with their reputation greatly enhanced, earning respect from fans, opponents and football legends alike.
