The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has dismissed as false and misleading reports linking the institution to a viral video showing a lecturer allegedly caught in an inappropriate act with a female student.

The video, which began circulating widely on social media on Wednesday, sparked outrage after a voice in the footage claimed the incident occurred at UNIZIK and described the lecturer as a “notorious randy” staff member.

In the video, several young people were seen forcing their way into an office to confront the alleged lecturer. However, before they could apprehend him, the man reportedly escaped through a window, leaving many social media users believing the incident happened on the university campus.

Responding to the controversy, the university, through its Director of Information and Public Relations, Aloysius Attah, said an internal verification had established that the incident neither occurred at UNIZIK nor involved any member of its academic community.

According to the institution, the man featured in the viral clip is not a lecturer at UNIZIK, while the woman involved is not a student of the university.

“The attention of the management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University has been drawn to a viral video and reports alleging that a lecturer identified as a staff member of the institution was caught engaging in inappropriate behaviour with a student,” the statement said.

“We wish to categorically state that the report is not only false but misleading. After due verification, it has been established that the incident did not happen at Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

“The man seen in the video is not a staff member of the university, and no student of UNIZIK is connected to the incident.”

The university stressed that it maintains high ethical standards among both staff and students, adding that it has a zero-tolerance policy against the exploitation or harassment of students in any form.

Management also expressed concern over the growing spread of misinformation on social media, noting that the race to break news and attract online traffic has contributed to the circulation of false reports capable of damaging the reputation of institutions and individuals.

UNIZIK urged journalists, bloggers, media organisations and social media users to verify information with appropriate authorities before publication, warning against spreading unverified claims.

The university further called on platforms that published the reports to retract and correct the false information, reiterating its commitment to transparency and responsible communication.
