The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has welcomed remarks made by United States Congressman John James regarding the detention and trial of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, describing the intervention as a significant development in its campaign for his release.

In a statement issued on Friday, July 24, 2026, and signed by its spokesman, Comrade Emma Powerful, IPOB said the Republican lawmaker from Michigan drew international attention to Kanu’s case during proceedings on the floor of the United States House of Representatives.

According to the group, Congressman James described Nigeria as one of the most dangerous places in the world for Christians, alleging that thousands have been killed by Islamist extremists, including Boko Haram and armed bandits. IPOB also claimed the lawmaker criticized Kanu’s terrorism trial and called for either a fresh trial conducted in accordance with Nigeria’s Constitution or his immediate and unconditional release.

The separatist group described the congressman’s intervention as a “historic moment,” arguing that it represents growing international awareness of Kanu’s legal situation.

IPOB further commended Congressman James and the United States Congress for providing a platform where, it said, issues surrounding Kanu’s detention and the persecution of Christians in Nigeria could be highlighted. The group also praised its representatives in the United States, claiming their diplomatic engagements had contributed to the development.

The statement maintained that Kanu’s case has now gained international attention and insisted that the IPOB leader has become “a global symbol of injustice.”

The group also reaffirmed its demand for Kanu’s immediate and unconditional release, while expressing confidence that international political and legal support for its cause is increasing.

IPOB concluded by praising its leadership and members for what it described as their continued commitment to pursuing its objectives and reiterated its position that the struggle for a Biafra referendum would continue.

Kanu, who is facing terrorism-related charges brought by the Nigerian government, has consistently denied all allegations against him. His legal proceedings remain before the Nigerian courts. The Federal Government has repeatedly maintained that the charges against him are lawful and should be determined through the judicial process.
