A viral video circulating on social media has triggered widespread debate after showing a man physically assaulting a university lecturer over allegations that he demanded sexual favours from a female student in exchange for approving her academic project.

The lecturer, who has been identified online as the Head of the Department of History and International Studies at Northwest University, Kano State, was allegedly confronted at a hotel by the student’s husband and several other individuals.

According to claims accompanying the video, the lecturer had repeatedly delayed approving the student’s project and allegedly insisted that she meet him privately before he would sign off on her work.

Reports circulating online claim the student agreed to the meeting as part of a plan to expose the lecturer.

The viral footage allegedly captures the moment the woman’s husband and others confronted the lecturer at the hotel, leading to a physical altercation during which he was assaulted.

While some Nigerians applauded the husband for defending his wife against the alleged misconduct, others criticized the assault, arguing that allegations of sexual harassment should be handled through legal and institutional channels rather than through violence.

As of the time of filing this report, the identities of the lecturer and the student involved have not been independently verified.

Similarly, the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and the allegations have not been officially confirmed by Northwest University, Kano State, or law enforcement authorities.

The university has also not issued any statement addressing the viral video or the claims circulating online.

Sexual harassment allegations have remained a persistent challenge in Nigerian tertiary institutions, with universities and education regulators repeatedly encouraging students to report misconduct through established complaint procedures.

If the allegations are confirmed, the incident is expected to intensify calls for stronger accountability measures and more effective systems for addressing abuse of power within higher education institutions.
