• Nigeria’s Super Falcons face a do-or-die showdown against Zambia on Saturday night, with defeat potentially ending the defending champions’ hopes of retaining the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title.

Defending champions Nigeria will be fighting to keep their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title defence alive when they take on Zambia in a crucial Group C clash at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, on Saturday night.

The Super Falcons head into the encounter under immense pressure following a shocking 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi in their opening match, while Zambia made a huge statement by thrashing Egypt 6-0 to move to the top of the group.

With their title defence already hanging in the balance, Nigeria must avoid another defeat to remain firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stage. A loss, coupled with a positive result for Malawi against Egypt, could see the nine-time African champions eliminated in the group stage for the first time in WAFCON history.

Nigeria Hold Historical Edge

Despite their poor start, history favours the Super Falcons.

Nigeria have won three of their previous four WAFCON meetings against Zambia, scoring 15 goals and conceding just one.

The Falcons defeated the Copper Queens 6-0 in 2014 and 4-0 in 2018 before Zambia claimed a narrow 1-0 victory in the third-place playoff in 2022. Nigeria responded emphatically by crushing Zambia 5-0 in the quarter-finals of the last edition.

Falcons Chasing Redemption

The defeat to Malawi ended several impressive records for Nigeria.

It was the first time the Super Falcons had ever conceded three goals in a WAFCON match and their first defeat to a tournament debutant.

Head coach Justin Madugu admitted after the defeat that the result served as a wake-up call, acknowledging that criticism of his tactics and team selection was expected.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade and striker Uchenna Kanu, who scored Nigeria’s goals against Malawi, will once again be expected to lead the team’s response.

Zambia Arrive Full of Confidence

Zambia, meanwhile, come into the match brimming with confidence after recording the biggest victory of the tournament so far.

Captain Barbra Banda stole the headlines by scoring four goals in the emphatic win over Egypt, becoming the first Zambian player to register a hat-trick at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Copper Queens also produced a dominant attacking display, creating 34 goal attempts, with Banda registering 11 shots while Grace Chanda contributed six key passes.

High-Stakes Showdown

Saturday’s clash is expected to play a decisive role in determining the fate of both teams in Group C.

Nigeria will be banking on their superior head-to-head record and experience to bounce back, while Zambia know another victory would move them closer to securing a place in the knockout stage.
