Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has called on Nigerians not to support former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 presidential election, accusing him of practising ethnic politics.

Lawal made the remarks during a telephone interview on Wednesday while reacting to the controversy surrounding the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship ticket in Adamawa State.

He alleged that Atiku was behind moves to replace the party’s governorship candidate, Suleiman Omar, with Tukur Modibbo.

According to Lawal, Omar emerged as the party’s candidate through the primary election, but efforts were allegedly being made to substitute him.

“Atiku Abubakar wants to replace Suleiman Omar as the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress in Adamawa State with Alhaji Tukur Modibbo,” Lawal claimed.

He further accused the former vice president of playing ethnic politics and urged Nigerians not to back his presidential ambition in the 2027 general election.

However, Atiku has dismissed the allegations, describing them as false, baseless and politically motivated.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, the former vice president denied any involvement in an alleged plot to replace the ADC governorship candidate in Adamawa State.

“The allegations are entirely false, baseless and the product of the fertile imagination of those determined to create unnecessary tension within the ADC,” the statement read.

Atiku insisted that he had never held any meeting, issued any directive or participated in discussions aimed at replacing the party’s duly nominated governorship candidate.

The statement further alleged that those spreading the claims were uncomfortable with the growing unity within the ADC and were attempting to create division through misinformation.

It urged party members and supporters to ignore what it described as malicious propaganda, reaffirming the party’s commitment to internal democracy, due process and the decisions of its constitutionally recognised organs.
