Star Apple is one of the African fruits also known as Asian and mostly consumed by Nigerians.

VerseNews learnt that the yellowish color fruit is called Star Apple in Africa because of its star like seed. It also comes with 4 or 6 small seeds with a gummy liquid inside it.

Scientifically it is called Chrysophyllum albidium (family – Sapotaceae) and locally it is called star apple, udara or update (Igbo language), agbalumo (Yoruba language), agwaluma (Hausa language), agonzugwe (Benin) and alasa (Ghana).

It grows in Nigeria between November and December and available for consumption between mostly between December. But research showed that it grows from December to April.

It’s nutrition contents include: Carbohydrate 10.49g, Fat 2.49g, Methionine 0.002g, Vitamin B2 0.038mg, Energy 91.09Kcal, Moisture 73g, Vitamin B1 0.049mg, Vitamin C25g, Protein 6.99g, Protein 1.52g, Phosphorus 18.95mg, Vitamin B3, 1.137mg, Tryptophan 0.004g, Total dietary fiber 1.92g, Iron 0.49.
