Nigeria vs Angola: AFCON 2023 Quarter-Final Match Preview, Injuries, Kick-Off Time, Venue

Here is all you need to know about the Super Eagles of Nigeria’s quarterfinal fixture against Angola.

Before Jose Peseiro’s team played their Cup of Nations opener a fortnight ago, there were modest expectations for the team.

However, after defeating Cameroon 2-0 in the most recent round, the three-time champions are starting to dream of a fourth crown.

Ademola Lookman scored twice during the match, but Victor Osimhen’s tenacity was just as valuable even though he didn’t add to the one goal he scored against Equatorial Guinea at AFCON 2023.

Peseiro’s team has benefited from a solid defense that has caused them to give up little opportunities to score.

Following South Africa’s stunning victory against Morocco on Tuesday to go to the World Cup 2022 semifinals, Nigeria is now expected to secure the matches against Angola and either Cape Verde or South Africa to advance to the championship match on February 11.

The competition indicates that the gap between established countries and developing ones is narrowing, as evidenced by the unexpected results thus far therefore, they cannot afford to sit back and relax.

The Super Eagles’ next opponent to advance to a semifinal is Angola, a country in southern Africa.

Nigeria are the highest-ranked team still playing in the tournament and is not expected to be an easy matchup for any team.

Expect Nigeria to stick with their back three, since they have recently been more successful doing so.

In terms of roster and background, Nigeria has the superior team.

The Super Eagles should get off to a fast start in their attempt to end the game in regular time rather than the draining extra period.

Jose Peseiro seems to have perfected his defensive setup, as they have shut out elite strikers in the last three games while maintaining clean sheets.

Even though Angola has preserved a clean sheet in their last two games, they are not as strong as Nigeria because they frequently give up opportunities.

Pedro Goncalves’s team unexpectedly won Group B with seven points which included Algeria, the 2019 champions.

Since the 1-1 draw with the Fennes, they have not looked back, defeating brave Mauritania (3-2), Burkina Faso (2-0), and Namibia (3-0).

With the help of Gelson Dala and Mabululu, who together have scored seven of the nine goals scored by the Palancas Negras, the free-scoring team’s AFCON 2023 campaign continues with their recent victory.

The two’s impact would surely be crucial to perhaps shocking Peseiro’s team in Abidjan on Friday, as that accounted for 77.8% of Angola’s goals at the continental showpiece.

The South African nation denied the Super Eagles a spot in the 2006 World Cup, demonstrating the history of the Palancas Negras undermining the aspirations of West African nations.

A strong performance to prevent Nigeria from qualifying for the AFCON 2023 semifinals would only be their second Cup of Nations knockout victory, following their first victory over Namibia last Saturday.

Super Eagles vs Angola Injuries

Stanley Nwabali, who is filling in for the unpredictable Francis Uzoho for Nigeria in the finals, is a worry for the national team as the goalie was forced to withdraw against Cameroon due to an injury.

Nevertheless, William Troost-Ekong was absent from Super Eagles practice on Monday and Tuesday due to a thigh issue that prevented him from playing in Guinea-Bissau’s last Group A match.

Moses Simon, Osimhen, and Lookman should play up top because Peseiro isn’t projected to switch up his approach in the competition’s quarterfinals.

With the exception of Mabululu and Dala, Fredy’s three assists have been crucial for the Palancas Negras, and Gilberto’s unpredictable play makes him a threat.

Neblu, who was sent off after 17 minutes against Namibia for handling the ball beyond his penalty area, is out of action for Angola.

Expected to give up a goal, Peseiro’s team should have enough on the other end to overcome the thrilling Palancas Negras.
