NLC Members Storm Labour Party Headquarters, Demands Julius Abure Resigns Immediately

NLC members in a protest at the Labour Party headquarters demands that the party’s chairman, Julius Abure resigns.

The conflict between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Labour Party (LP) has escalated as members of the union on Wednesday staged a protest outside the party’s headquarters in Abuja, demanding the Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure resigns immediately.

The protesters led by Mr. Theophilus Ndubuaku, the acting Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress Political Commission, alleged that Barrister Abure was not properly elected and labeled the upcoming party convention as illegal.

The NLC also alleged that the convention, scheduled for March 27 in Umuahia, is a ploy to re-elect Abure as the party chairman amidst concerns of secrecy and embezzlement allegations.

They are advocating for the establishment of a caretaker transition committee to facilitate a fair and comprehensive national convention for the party.

However, the LP leadership rejected this proposal, claiming that it is motivated by Ajaero’s purported aspiration to become the next national chairman of the party.

It would be recalled that on Saturday, March 16, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Labour Party accused Ajaero of making strenuous efforts to oust Abure from his position.

This allegation was in response to an open letter issued last Friday by the political arm of the NLC, the Nigeria Labour Congress Political Commission directing its members to picket the party’s state secretariats.

The letter reads in part: “That given the intransigence of the National Chairman of the Labour Party to unilaterally hold a National Convention of the Labour Party, financial rascality and contempt for the leadership of the NLC, the NLC State Councils and State Political Committees should mobilise workers to picket all the State Secretariats of the Labour Party, scheduled for Wednesday, 20th March 2024.”
