Cameroon has appointed Belgian Marc Brys, aged 61, as the new head coach of their men’s football team, replacing former coach Rigobert Song, aged 47, whose contract was not renewed in February.
VerseNews reports that Brys will be assisted by Joachim Mununga and Giannis Xilouris, along with a revamped technical, medical, and administrative staff, as announced by the sports ministry.
Song’s contract, which was agreed upon in March 2022, concluded on February 29th. During his tenure, he guided the Indomitable Lions to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they secured a notable victory against Brazil but were ultimately eliminated in the group stage.
At the recent Africa Cup of Nations finals in Ivory Coast, Song’s team reached the round of 16 but suffered defeat to eventual finalists Nigeria.
Having earned 137 caps for Cameroon as a player, Song leaves behind a legacy, but the country looks forward to a fresh start under Brys’ leadership.
