Conflicting court orders emerged as the EFCC attempted to arrest former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello on corruption charges.

A Kogi State High Court barred his arrest, while a Federal High Court in Abuja granted the EFCC a warrant for his apprehension.

The legal battle underscores significant judicial contradictions surrounding high-profile corruption cases.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday made a move to arrest Yahaya Bello, the immediate past governor of Kogi State, facing allegations of corruption.

VerseNews reported that the EFCC’s operation involved cordoning off the road and entrance to Bello’s residence in Wuse Zone 4, effectively laying siege throughout the day.

Despite the strong presence of EFCC operatives, Bello’s successor, Usman Ododo, visited in a show of solidarity, greeted by cheers from Bello’s supporters gathered at the scene.

Amidst the standoff, two contrasting court decisions surfaced, complicating the EFCC’s efforts. A Kogi State High Court in Lokoja issued a ruling preventing the EFCC from arresting, detaining, or prosecuting Bello, citing protection of his fundamental human rights.

Justice I.A Jamil emphasized that any action against Bello would be void unless sanctioned by the court.

However, in a conflicting move, the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Emeka Nwite, granted the EFCC a warrant for Bello’s arrest, setting the stage for his potential arraignment the following day.

The backdrop of these legal skirmishes includes serious allegations by the EFCC against Bello and two associates.

VerseNews gathered that in March, the EFCC indicted them for allegedly diverting approximately N100 billion before Bello’s governorship began in 2016.

The charges, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, accuse them of money laundering involving vast sums, suspected to be proceeds of fraud and breaches of public trust. The state government has dismissed the accusations as a politically motivated “witch-hunt.”

This high-stakes legal battle highlights the ongoing challenges in tackling corruption within Nigeria’s political landscape, with the EFCC aggressively pursuing high-profile figures amidst political complexities and legal hurdles.
