1.8 Million Candidates Will Write WASSCE In Four Countries - WAEC

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Nigeria has reported that 1,814,344 students from 22,229 schools have registered for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), with 912,016 females and 902,328 males.

This year’s registration shows an increase of 192,948 candidates from the previous year, indicating a balanced gender representation among the candidates.

The examination body also disclosed that the registered candidates will write the examination in four WAEC members countries – Nigeria, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.

The West African Examinations Council, Nigeria, has stated that a total of 1,814,344 candidates from 22,229 schools have registered for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for school candidates.

Speaking on Monday at the WAEC Lagos Office, the Head of Nigeria Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, said out of this number, 902,328 were males, while 912,016 were females.

He noted that the registered candidates will write the examination in four WAEC members countries – Nigeria, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.

He stated, “A total of 1,814,344 candidates from 22,229 schools have registered for the examination. Out of this number, 902,328 are males, amounting to 49.73 per cent, while 912,016 are females, which is 50.27 per cent of the total candidature. The statistics show a further increase in the number of females and males respectively, compared to last year. However, on the whole, the candidature for this year increased by 192,948.”

Dangut noted that the council was ready to conduct the examination, saying it would commence on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, and end on June 24, 2024.

Dangut said, “I am delighted to inform you that WASSCE for School Candidates, 2024 will take place between Tuesday, April 30, and Monday, June 24, 2024, in Nigeria, spanning seven weeks and six days.

“The examination will be conducted in four WAEC member countries, namely: Nigeria, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.”

“We want to inform candidates of the council’s readiness to conduct WASSCE.”

Dangut explained that candidates would be examined in 76 subjects, made up of 197 papers, stating that about 30,000 practicing senior secondary school teachers, nominated by various Ministries of Education, would supervise the examination.

He spoke on online access to the WAEC website, “The general public can now gain access to all WAEC services online and in real-time through the WAEC Request Management Portal (WAEC CHATBOT), or chat with the Council via WhatsApp.

“The WAEC verify provides tertiary institutions and other establishments, access to the WAEC database for the verification of prospective students’/applicants’ results.”
