The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has firmly rejected the salary increment announced by the administration led by Bola Tinubu on April 30, 2024.
VerseNews reports that the federal government’s approval of a wage hike ranging from 25 to 35 per cent for civil servants across various consolidated salary structures was met with disapproval by the NLC.
This Online News platform gathered that the announcement, made on the eve of the global celebration of May Day, aimed to acknowledge the contributions of the working class.
However, the NLC, led by its assistant general secretary, Chris Onyeka, deemed the move futile, emphasizing that the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC) lacked the authority to determine the national minimum wage.
“What they pretend to have done is a waste of time. It does not amount to anything for us and those in the federal civil service,” Onyeka declared.
Onyeka stressed that the NLC remains steadfast in its demand for a minimum wage of N615,000 for workers nationwide, reaffirming the union’s commitment to advocating for the welfare and rights of Nigerian workers.
