The Rivers State House of Assembly has initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu over alleged gross misconduct.

This escalates tensions between Fubara and pro-Wike lawmakers amid a growing political crisis.

The Rivers State House of Assembly has initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, citing allegations of gross misconduct.

VerseNews reports that a notice issued by the lawmakers stated: “In compliance with Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and other extant laws, we, the undersigned members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, hereby forward to you a Notice of Gross Misconduct by the Governor of Rivers State in the performance of the functions of his office.”

The notice accused Fubara of “reckless and unconstitutional expenditure of public funds contrary to Sections 120, 121 (1), (2) and 122 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).” His deputy, Ms. Odu, was also accused of similar financial infractions.

The impeachment move was spearheaded by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, who leads the faction loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike. The assembly has directed the clerk to publish the allegations in at least three national newspapers, as required by Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution.

This development comes amid ongoing tensions between Fubara and pro-Wike lawmakers. Just days ago, Fubara attempted to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill to the House but was allegedly locked out of the assembly quarters in Port Harcourt.

The lawmakers, however, denied wrongdoing, stating that they received Fubara’s letter too late to process it. “The March 11 date on the letter gave them inadequate time to acknowledge it before inviting him to appear for the presentation,” they claimed.

The impeachment proceedings further escalate the power struggle in Rivers State, deepening the rift between the governor and Wike’s loyalists in the assembly.
