5 Top Nigerian Musicians You Don’t Know Are Nollywood Movie Stars

Nigerian pop culture is a goldmine of talent—and sometimes, the biggest surprises come from the crossover between music and film. While we know our favourite artists for their chart-topping hits, a growing number have quietly built impressive acting résumés in Nollywood.

Here are five top Nigerian musicians who’ve gone beyond the mic to prove they also have serious screen presence:

1. Falz — The Comedian Who Became a Multi-Award-Winning Actor

Folarin Falana, aka Falz, isn’t just a witty rapper and lyrical genius—he’s also one of Nollywood’s most celebrated musicians-turned-actors. His breakout role came in Jenifa’s Diary as the hilarious Segun, where his comic timing with Funke Akindele made him a household name.

Falz didn’t stop there. He went on to win two Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs)—one for Jenifa’s Diary and another for New Money, making history as the first Nigerian musician to do so.

His film credits include Chief Daddy, Merry Men, 10 Days in Sun City, Your Excellency, and the YouTube series Therapy, which he co-produced under his film company, House21TV. Falz has truly earned his spot as a Nollywood leading man.

2. Banky W — From Music Mogul to Romantic Lead

Banky W movies

Olubankole Wellington, better known as Banky W, made his screen debut in The Return of Jenifa, but it was his role as Dozie in The Wedding Party (2016) that shot him to Nollywood stardom. The romantic comedy was a box-office smash and remains one of Nigeria’s most successful films.

He reprised his role in The Wedding Party 2, and then stunned audiences with a lead performance in Up North (2018), showcasing emotional range and on-screen charisma. He followed up with a memorable turn in the action-comedy Sugar Rush.

Banky W’s evolution from music heartthrob to certified Nollywood star is nothing short of impressive.

3. Waje — The Soulful Voice That Commands the Screen

Waje movies

Waje, born Aituaje Iruobe, is known for her powerhouse vocals—but she also has the kind of screen presence directors dream of. Her acting debut in Tunnel (2014) marked a seamless shift from music to film, sharing scenes with Nse Ikpe-Etim and Femi Jacobs.

She followed up with a standout role in the blockbuster Fifty (2015), and more recently appeared in Christmas in Lagos (2024), produced by Jade Osiberu.

Waje isn’t just in front of the camera—she’s behind it too. She co-founded Hermanes Media, the production company behind the film She Is, showing she’s serious about building a legacy in Nigerian film.

Remilekun Safaru, better known as Reminisce, shook Nollywood with his debut as Makanaki in Kemi Adetiba’s crime drama King of Boys (2018). His portrayal of the hardened, street-smart gangster was so convincing that fans demanded more.

He delivered again in the Netflix sequel, King of Boys: The Return of the King (2021), where his performance was praised for its raw power and chilling realism. Reminisce proved that his gritty storytelling isn’t limited to rap—he can bring characters to life on screen just as fiercely.

5. Illbliss — The Unexpected Powerhouse

Illbliss

Tobechukwu Ejiofor, popularly known as Illbliss, took everyone by surprise with his acting debut in King of Boys. As Odogwu Malay, a feared political enforcer, Illbliss brought swagger and menace to the screen with ease.

His role in Kemi Adetiba’s political thriller didn’t just add spice—it proved he has natural acting instincts. Fans who knew him only for lyrical punchlines were stunned by his transformation into a compelling on-screen presence.

From sold-out concerts to blockbuster films, these musicians have redefined what it means to be multi-talented in Nigeria’s entertainment industry. So next time you watch a Nollywood movie, don’t be surprised if the face behind the character is also behind some of your favorite songs.
