Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has been handed a two-month suspension for illegal betting, following a probe into suspicious wagers during a Serie A match. He avoided a potential four-year ban for sporting fraud.

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, has been suspended for two months over illegal betting activities, following an investigation by Italian football authorities.

According to Football Italia on Tuesday, the Nigerian international and Udinese shot-stopper avoided a much harsher four-year ban for sporting fraud after disciplinary proceedings concluded this month.

The controversy stems from a Serie A fixture between Udinese and Lazio on March 11, 2024, during which Okoye received a yellow card for time-wasting in the 64th minute while his team led 2-1.

Authorities flagged a suspicious surge in bets predicting Okoye would be booked—most of them traced to the Udine region. The 8/1 odds reportedly yielded over €120,000 in winnings.

As a result, Okoye and three acquaintances were placed under investigation, and the matter was referred to Italy’s disciplinary commission in June 2025.

While early speculation suggested Okoye could face a four-year ban for sporting fraud, the panel opted for a lesser charge of illegal betting, citing insufficient evidence for match-fixing.

The two-month suspension will begin on August 18, 2025, when Udinese host Carrarese in the Coppa Italia, sidelining Okoye for six Serie A matches. He is expected to return on October 19.

Okoye, 25, joined Udinese from English side Watford in 2023 and has 18 international caps for Nigeria.
